Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours?
by Roland Allen
Roland Allen's writing was 60 years ahead of its time. An Anglican missionary who wrote in the early 20th century, his ideas were not welcomed by many in his day as they challenged the prevailing approach to missions. In the 1960s, some of his books were brought back into print as people became more open to his ideas. This is one of those books.
This classic study of Paul's missionary work (first published in 1912) focuses not on the apostle's doctrine or character but on the method by which he accomplished his task. Throughout, Allen compares Paul's methods to modern missionary methods; he concludes by suggesting some ways the apostolic method might be usefully employed today.
Chapter 6 on biblical principles of church finances is itself worth the value of the book. The principles Allen lays out in this book (principles is actually a more accurate word than methods) are just as applicable to the U.S. and other Western nations as they are to China and East Africa where Allen worked.
